Design in general is a funny business. If you think about it, it is one of the only areas of human endeavor where outdated forms are kept as a stylistic option. Old, hard to read fonts, outdated architectural models, and quaint Victorian landscaping ideas are only some of the many ways in which design respects tradition at the same time as it worships innovation. Building design is a particularly tricky one. The funny thing about building designs is, until recently, they were greatly determined by the available materials. If you look at Greek columns, medieval cathedrals, and others wonders of architecture, you will see that they were based as much upon scientific innovation as upon ornamental design.
Nowadays, when you are designing a building, there are more options than ever. Architectural design has split and gone into many directions. One of the most promising areas right now is sustainable building design. Until a few years ago, this was done mainly for moral purposes or to attract positive media attention. After all, green designs had not advanced much. As with any new technology, it used to cost more to do things in that style than you could really expect to save from it. Nowadays, however, green buildings make a lot of sense. As energy costs rise, government regulations become stricter, and people take more and more drastic actions to try to protect the environment, building green will turn out to be a great investment. Of course, green building design is one of those aspects of architecture that tries to tackle the building as a whole. Something like building renovation is more cosmetic in nature. Renovating an old building raises a lot of interesting questions. When I was hired, for example, to renovate an art museum, I was in a pretty precarious position. On the one hand, people love the museum. It's classical stylings were quite popular. On the other hand, there were better, more a modern ways of lighting the building and laying out the corridors. Deciding on the balance between old and modern was one of those challenges that architects live for. Of course, some aspects of building design are accessible to everyone. Building renovation is something that everyone does in the home at one point or another. You might not fancy yourself a building designer, but that is exactly what you are when you decide on a new layout for your kitchen, bedroom, or living room.
