Sensational holiday cheese platters to delight your guests
With the holidays coming up, you have so much to do to prepare for family get-togethers and parties. Shopping becomes a major part of your life and time soon becomes scarcer than hen's teeth. Planning menus and shopping for both food and gifts can eat up a lot of your time. Not to mention that life goes on, just as it does for the rest of the year. So you've got to be imaginative and efficient in order to pull it all off in an attractive and un-frenzied manner. If you don't have time to be cooking ten different appetizers, here's a great time saving solution. Just one stop at the deli or cheese shop and a few simple garnishes is all you need for a magnificent holiday cheese platter, with something that will appeal to everyone at your gathering. The key to a successful cheese platter is diversity. There are literally thousands of different types of cheeses, so if you've got a cheese shop in your hometown, be sure to stop by when you're in the neighborhood. The staff are well versed in their products and can give you advice on types, textures, flavors and origins. If not, do a little browsing online. You'll find articles and descriptions which can make you an expert in no time. If you prefer to shop your local deli, you won't find the diversity of a cheese specialty shop, but you can still find a diverse selection for your cheese platter. Most delis and cheese shops are more than willing to provide a slice so that you can taste and decide for yourself, before you buy. You'll want to have at least eight choices in cheeses, ranging from mild to sharp in taste, as well as a range of textures. For example, you might choose a Teleme or Farmer's style cheese which is soft and creamy in texture. Another soft cheese that's a bit unusual and absolutely delicious is fresh mozzarella. These days, more and more supermarkets carry this cheese, usually in the traditional egg shape, submerged in its whey in a pint container. Served on a separate cheese platter, sliced and garnished with basil and grape tomatoes, this cheese is a guaranteed party hit. French Brie is the best. While not foe everyone's taste, you'll certainly not have any remaining at the end of the evening. Brie is served warmed, just to the point of being slightly runny. Scoop it up with crackers. Firm textured cheeses, such as Swiss, hot pepper jack and sharp or smoked cheddars will round out your cheese platter nicely. Havarti dill provides a medium texture with a savory herb flavor. You can separate each cheese with sprigs of fresh herbs, on a single platter and offer your crackers on a separate platter. You can cut the firmer cheeses in cubes for toothpick skewering. Whatever your choice of cheeses, this is a simple formula for successful cheese platters!
