My 3-year old daughter has graduated to being a “big girl” and no longer needs to wear pull-ups at nighttime. There will most likely be some accidents in the upcoming days, months or years, but for the most part, she’s been waking up dry for months now. It is incredibly exciting, a huge step for us and for her. Of course, it doesn’t beat the happiness that I felt when potty training became officially successful. We could cross diapers off of our weekly grocery store trips. Paying for diapers had gotten to be quite expensive. Pull-ups weren’t cheap either, but at least she wasn’t going through several a day as she had with diapers.
I hated buying diapers. There were just too many brands, too many kinds and too many designs to choose from. Why can’t diapers just be diapers? There were so many times that I choose to get the more generic brand names of diapers and we were more satisfied with them than the name brand. For example, I found the CVS brand to be wonderful. Every so often, CVS would put them on sale for buy one, get one free and I’d buy four packs. That would save me from having to buy diapers for several weeks and I’d get to save about $10.00 when that happened. I can’t even begin to approximate how many diapers I changed in the 2-1/2 years that it took for her to be considered potty trained. I do know that I can count on one hand, the number of diapers that my husband has changed in that time frame. He would take one whiff of her stinky diapers and disappear into thin air. He’d make a big point of handing her to me before he’d leave the house with her so that I would check her diaper. It drove me crazy. However, we’ve made it this far and still are going strong. I’m quite sure that my daughter has to be relieved to not being wearing diapers or pull-ups anymore either. I don’t imagine that they would be too comfortable, but obviously I was too young to remember wearing them. Maybe that’s why children tend to take off running when their diapers are off. Being naked might feel like pure freedom to them. No wonder they make us chase them around until we finally catch them.
I love the fact that I can now skip the baby aisle at the grocery stores. I used to hate standing there looking at all of the different diapers. You had to consider weight, design and style when buying them. It just seems too complicated. Like I said before, why can’t diapers just be diapers?
