Almost every school has one. Whether it’s cute and fuzzy or ferocious and mean-looking – a school mascot exists. They jump around the fields during a high school football game. They’re jumping around in all their glory trying to get the crowds to cheer louder or do something silly. The person hiding underneath the school mascot uniform gets to act a bit crazier while in disguise than they normally would. Sometimes, the identity of the school mascot is kept top secret. No matter what the tradition is at your local high schools, the legacy of the school mascots will always continue.
In recent years, many schools have had their mascots challenged. Some schools who have an Indian as a mascot have been questioned. Perhaps some people of Indian heritage have taken offense to their ancestors being used as a mascot. Some schools have gone so far as to change their mascot and mottos just to appease others. A local school in my area is nicknamed the Warriors. Their school mascot is an Indian. Now, no one has found this to be offensive, as of yet, but that day may be coming. In my opinion, it is almost honoring the heritage. Indians are known to be fearless and brave warriors. Having an Indian as a mascot isn’t a mockery – it is a form of flattery. However, not everyone feels that way. Many people have taken it upon themselves to challenge things that have been in place for many, many years.
Since a school mascot outfit can’t hold up year after year, every once in a while, it’ll get a makeover. Manufacturers are always changing things about clothing. They’ll make tiny improvements to costumes as the years go on. When it is time to get a new costume, it may appear different than the same one did a few years ago. It may even cost more money. And so, the school mascot evolves. It doesn’t change – it simply gets a bit more modern, you might say. Most often, people don’t even notice the changes.
If you’re searching for an idea for a new school mascot or to bring one into your school, consider finding one that may not be offensive to anyone. And, you certainly don’t want to choose the same mascot that a rival or local school currently is using. Do some research and be creative. A school mascot, while seemingly unimportant, is a huge part of morale and school spirit. The next time you see one jumping around and trying to get everyone to cheer, join in.
